Tonight, coming home from a lovely evening at the neighborhood casino night, one of the people there drove away in a Merc C350 Coupe with European-Style TEXAS license plates on the rear. Is that legal?!

Once in a blue moon, I'll see a car with similar plates. I just figured that the vehicle had recently been shipped across the pond. These plates, however, CLEARLY had a Texas Flag in the upper left hand corner. Da Fuq?!

From doing a quick google search they're not strictly legal, but are probably better than running no front plate. Basically you're hoping that cops don't know their not legal

Sounds like it's not legal. But then again I've been to areas in North Texas where they don't care what you have on the front of your car.

I read that too. If the state doesn't require a front plate, then you can throw one up on the nose. But Texas mandates front and back plates. Plus, the one that I was looking at was on the back end.

This one was on the ass. That's what confused me.

Get one now before Texas decides that LicensePlates.TV is illegal for not being offered thru a dealership network.

/zing!

Not sure it would look right on my F150 4x4.

Nah. Just tell your buddies it was a Euro delivery F150.

Yeah that's a little weird. He must have the money to not worry about it. But the back ones are set-up to be read by Texas toll-ways and police plate readers, so a cop would probably grab him for that pretty quickly.

I never put my front plate on (despite being warned a few times), but I did have a few friends who put used euro plates on their front bumpers (which seems like it would be treated as a novelty plate).

Did he maybe have a plate in the back window?

Maybe there was one in the window. I didn't see it, but I wasn't looking for it, either.

The police in the suburb where I live are always on the prowl for license plate infractions. Quite a few athletes/rich folk live here, and every exotic without a front plate gets a ticket for it, no exceptions. Us normal joes usually get warnings, however.

I've never heard of this being legal. If it was, my euro import e23 would have euro style NJ plates on it right now.

Legal use of European license plates on cars driven on public roads in the US:
1. Rich European tourists/world travelers who ship their vehicles here temporarily
2. Servicemembers and dependents upon return from an overseas PCS
3. Decoration on the front end in 1 plate states
4. In extremely rare cases, on historically significant vehicles or ones imported under "show and display"
5. Underneath a properly displayed state license plate
6. Thats all I can remember though I have seen Mexican license plates officially done in the European size driving around in the US.

So no, what you saw was illegal.

Was the real plate inside the back window? I suppose that could be sort of almost legal-ish.

There are a lot running around Houston. Seems like you are really asking to get pulled over with those plates, but they look sick.

I didn't see one in the back window, but honestly it was night and I wasn't looking for it.
